The German Bride by Joanna Hershon

Set mostly in post Civil War, New Mexico.  A guilt ridden young German girl, Eva, accepts a marriage proposal from an acceptable fellow Jewish young man who has been successful in America.  She will be removed from the environment of pain in Germany, to make a new life.  Her husband’s success was greatly exaggerated and life in the remote, rough, and newly settled  village of Santa Fe is tough.  Disappointment after disappointment knocks her down.  The story drags on endlessly, as depressing as the events of many years of her life.  Always hoping for redemption, I slogged through it but was disappointed.  There is a hint of something different for her hum-drum life in only the last few pages.  But it could only be a hint of the next dreary novel of her life.  Don’t bother with this one.  3 out of 10 is my rating.
