The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows, ©2008.  The format is as unusual as its title.  Written entirely as letters between the characters, many of whom have not met when the story begins.  It is the post WWII era of relief from the war, and innocence of ulterior motives.  The Island of Guernsey is located in the English Channel.  It is hard to pin down a main character as there is a main character who does not take an active current part in events, but whose life effected most everyone in the story.  Actually it appears there is one main character who has taken the reins of communication that lead the rest of the very tame plot.  Relationships were carefully formed in those post war days, yet welcomed.  The community took an interest in their literary society and its members, but it wasn't any book club like today!  The Society got its start as a way to escape punishment from the occupying German forces on the island.  I smiled every time I had to part with this book for a few hours and every time I anticipated picking it up again.  I've marked some passages I want to add to my "favorite" quotes list.  Delightful.  Different.  9 out of 10.  Recommended reading.
