Wonderful, highly recommended read: Not Without My Daughter by Betty Mahmoody

Not Without My Daughter, by Betty Mahmoody.  True story.  Drama, suspense, intrigue,  betrayal.  After living for many years in America, the doctor husband takes his wife and daughter to his homeland, Iran, for "a visit."   Little does she know he does not plan to return to America.  Good way to learn about the way the Iranian families live, interact, and support each other.  Imagine affording a home with a stove and oven for many years and never having used it.  Or having a shower that doesn't get used.  Or letting an undiapered baby remain on the carpeting...all the time.  Or eating so sloppily food comes out of mouths and drops back into everyone else's food!  Or having your child taken from you and being locked up alone for weeks at a time.  Or being stopped on the street by women "police" because your socks are wrinkled or some of your hair on your forehead is showing.  This is the tip of the iceberg. I knew how it was going to end, but couldn't delay reading sessions for very long because I wanted them to escape.  Copyright 1987, so it's been around for awhile.  But I'll bet nearly the same experiences could be written now, 25 years later, in many parts of the world.  Sally Field starred in the movie years ago.  10 on my 1-10 scale.  READ IT.
