Below Stairs by Margaret Powell

Below Stairs by Margaret Powell.  Biography. In the early 1900's, the young Margaret Powell, from a poverty stricken, large family who couldn't afford to keep her, entered into service in rich people's homes in England.  She worked very hard with little promise of a better life.  She decided to try working in other wealthy homes and eventually learned enough about cooking, to be someone's cook. One of the most coveted positions among those "downstairs."  The book jacket says this memoir inspired Downton Abbey.  It sure goes along with the Downton Abbey theme.  Nice read.  Short.  8 out of 10.
